[Since writing this, I am saddened to hear of the terrorist attack near the Blue Mosque. I only hope that Istanbul recovers quickly.] Note to self: check the weather forecast the day before you go on holiday, not the week before. Having thought Istanbul was going to be 8 degrees, we were totally unprepared for the snow storm, hail and ungritted roads that literally had me skating all over the shop, especially after a bev or two. At one point we had to abandon our Uber, after it became snow-logged, despite the clutch of helpful Turkish men trying to push us out of a drift. I think it might be karma. If I’m going to be so self-indulgent to
spend all my money on venture to unashamedly beautiful cities on a regular basis (I took my boyfriend as his Christmas present) then I only deserve such challenges… though a beanie or a pair of non-porous trainers might have been a nice idea.
Being the basic bitch that I am, I was compelled to book the trip after hearing various rave reviews of the recently opened Soho House there. I would happily live a BB existence staying exclusively in Soho Houses across the globe, and decorate my house in a creepy homage to their effortlessly rendered decor. Aside from a brief spate of bad service on new year, it’s a fucking brilliant hotel and I’m sad I ever had to leave, quite frankly (I ate 12 of their salted chocolate chip cookies in 2 days, so take that as a roaring success story.)
If you only have a few days, I’d stick to the whizzy little list that we subscribed to: the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofya, the Grand Bazaar and the cistern (we were underwhelmed, but friends’ loved this — so could be that you will too) and leave plenty of time for general wandering as the colourful buildings jar with the abundance of technicolour graffiti in a way which makes beautiful photographs if you love snapping away (I obviously also ignored SH’s very dull no photos rule.) We also had a delicious meal at Munferit. I’d love to return in the summer, to see the visa from one of the city’s many roof-top bars and to try the Mandonlin restaurant on Soho House’s roof top, which is apparently the best of Soho House’s four eateries.
